Huepac is a small town located in the center of the Mexican state of Sonora. It is the main town, also called the "seat," of the Huépac Municipality.
Most of the people living in the municipality live right in the town of Huepac. In the year 2000, about 1,142 people lived there. The total area of the municipality is around 317.37 square kilometers.
History of Huepac
Huepac was started a long time ago, in 1644. It was founded by a Jesuit missionary named Gerónimo de la Canal. He first named the town San Lorenzo de Güepaca.
The name "Güepaca" comes from the Ópata Indian language. It means "big valley." The word "Güe" means "big," and "paca" means "valley."
Geography and Climate
The area around Huepac has many hills and valleys. The town itself sits at an elevation of 304 meters (about 997 feet) above sea level.
The weather in Huepac is usually warm. The average temperature throughout the year is about 21.4 degrees Celsius (70.5 degrees Fahrenheit). It doesn't rain a lot, with an average of 424.0 millimeters (about 16.7 inches) of rain each year.
The Rio Sonora (Sonora River) flows through this region. Smaller streams like El Gavilán, Güevarachi, and Triunfo flow into the Sonora River.
Economy and Jobs
The two main ways people make a living in Huepac are through farming and raising cattle.
Farmers grow corn and beans, mostly to feed their own families. They also grow special grasses to feed the cattle. In 2000, there were about 15,000 cattle in the area.
In the year 2000, about 340 people in Huepac had jobs.
