Hugh III of Broyes facts for kids
Hugh III, Lord of Broyes, was an important noble who lived from around 1120 to about 1199. He was known as the Lord of Broyes, which meant he was a powerful ruler of a specific area called Broyes. Hugh was the son of Simon I of Broyes and Félicité de Brienne.
Hugh's father, Simon, owned three castles. These castles were located in Broyes, Châteauvillain, and Beaufort. When Hugh grew up, he inherited the castles at Broyes and Châteauvillain. His brother received the castle at Beaufort and became known as Simon of Beaufort. Hugh III also took part in a big historical event called the Second Crusade.

Hugh III liked to live at his castle in Châteauvillain. He was married twice during his life.
Hugh's First Marriage
Hugh's first wife was Stephanie de Bar. She was also known as the Lady of Commercy. Stephanie was the daughter of Renaud I, Count of Bar and Mousson, and Gisèle of Vaudémont.
With Stephanie, Hugh had four children:
- Simon de Broyes (born around 1145, lived until after May 1208). He married Nicole of Salins.
- Emmeline de Broyes
- Sophie de Broyes
- Agnes de Broyes. She married Simon of Brixey, Lord of Bourlémont, and later Henry of Fouvent.
Hugh's Second Marriage
Hugh's second wife was Elisabeth (also called Isabelle) de Dreux. She was known as the Lady of Baudémont. Elisabeth was the daughter of Robert I, Count of Dreux, and Agnes de Baudemont. Their marriage lasted for 21 years. Elisabeth lived until at least 1228 and did not marry again after Hugh's death.
With Elisabeth, Hugh had two more children:
- Emmeline de Broyes (died around July 1248 or April 1249). She married Odo II of Champlitte and later Erard II of Chacenay.
- Simon de Broyes (died 1260). He married Alix of Luzy. Alix was the daughter of Dalmas of Luzy and Beatrix de Vignory.
