Hugh IX of Lusignan (born between 1163 and 1168 – died November 5, 1219) was an important French nobleman. He was also known as "Hugh the Brown" (le Brun). Hugh IX was the grandson of Hugh VIII of Lusignan.

His father, also named Hugh, was a co-ruler of Lusignan. He passed away in 1169. Hugh IX took over as the lord of Lusignan in 1172. He also became the lord of Couhé and Chateau-Larcher in the 1190s. When his grandfather died, Hugh IX became the Count of La Marche. He was known as Hugh IV in this role. Hugh IX died during the Fifth Crusade. He was fighting at the Siege of Damietta when he passed away.

Hugh IX is mentioned in old poems. A poet named Gaucelm Faidit wrote about him. In these poems, Hugh IX was called Maracdes, which means "Emerald." This name was a special nickname for him.

Family Life and Marriages

Hugh IX was married twice during his life. His first marriage was to a woman named Agathe de Preuilly. This marriage ended in 1189.

  • Hugh X of Lusignan: He was Hugh IX's son. Hugh X later married Isabella of Angoulême.
  • Agathe of Lusignan: She was Hugh IX's daughter. Agathe married Geoffroi V Seigneur de Pons around 1220.

Hugh IX's second wife was Mathilde of Angoulême. They married around the year 1200. Mathilde was born in 1181 and died in 1233. She was the daughter of Wulgrin III of Angoulême, who was the Count of Angoulême.

Hugh IX has been shown in TV shows. Actor James Cossins played him in a 1978 BBC TV series. This drama was called The Devil's Crown.
