Hugh V of Maine facts for kids
Hugh V (born around 1054 – possibly died 1131) was a count who ruled the area of Maine from 1069 to 1072.
Life as Count of Maine
Hugh V was the son of Azzo d'Este and Gersendis. Gersendis was the sister of a previous count, Hugh IV.
In 1070, people living in Le Mans and some important local leaders decided they didn't want to be controlled by the Normans anymore. They fought back and pushed the Normans out. After this, they invited young Hugh V to become their new count.
However, the people soon realized that Hugh V wasn't very good at leading. One historian, Orderic Vitalis, said that Hugh was "not fit to rule." After a short time as count, his cousin, Elias, convinced Hugh to sell him the county. Hugh agreed and sold his title.
Family Life
In 1077, Hugh married a woman named Gersent. She was the daughter of Robert Guiscard. But Hugh found he couldn't manage his marriage with her either, so he ended their marriage. Because of this, the Pope at the time, Pope Urban, removed him from the church (this was called excommunication). Hugh V died without having any children.
When Hugh V Died
Hugh V likely died around the year 1131. However, the exact date of his death is not known.
