Hugh XII of Lusignan facts for kids
Hugh XII de Lusignan was an important noble in France during the 1200s. He was also known as Hugh VII of La Marche and Hugh III of Angoulême. He was born around 1235 or 1240. His parents were Hugh XI of Lusignan and Yolande of Brittany.
When his father passed away in 1250, Hugh XII took over his titles. He became the lord (or "seigneur") of lands like Lusignan, Couhé, and Peyrat. He also became the Count of La Marche and Count of Angoulême. A count was a powerful noble who ruled a large area called a county.
Family Life
On January 29, 1253 or 1254, Hugh XII married Jeanne de Fougères. They were married in a place called Fougères. Jeanne was the daughter of Raoul III, who was the lord of Fougères, and Isabelle de Craon. Jeanne passed away after 1273.
Hugh and Jeanne had six children together:
- Hugh XIII of Lusignan
- Guy of Lusignan, Count of Angoulême
- Yolande de Lusignan
- Jeanne of Lusignan, who married Bernard-Ezy I, the lord of Albret. Later, she married Sir Peter de Geneville.
- Marie de Lusignan, who passed away after 1312. She married Etienne II, Count of Sancerre, in 1288.
- Isabelle de Lusignan, who married Jean of Vesci.
His Final Crusade
Hugh XII de Lusignan passed away in 1270. He was on a Crusade at the time. A Crusade was a religious war fought by European Christians. He joined King Louis IX of France on what was called the Eighth Crusade. Hugh died during an early battle of this journey. After his death, his oldest son, Hugh XIII de Lusignan, took over his titles and lands.
