Hugh d'Aubigny (died May 7, 1243) was an important English nobleman. He was the fifth person to hold the title of Earl of Arundel. Hugh was the last male from the d'Aubigny family to be the Earl of Arundel.

Who Was Hugh d'Aubigny?
Hugh d'Aubigny was born into a powerful family. His father was William d'Aubigny, 3rd Earl of Arundel. Hugh had an older brother named William d'Aubigny, 4th Earl of Arundel. When his older brother passed away in 1224, Hugh became the new Earl of Arundel. This meant he took charge of Arundel Castle and the lands that came with the title.
A Special Royal Job
When Hugh became Earl, he also inherited a very special job. This job was called the hereditary Chief Butler of England. A "hereditary" job means it passes down from parent to child. As Chief Butler, Hugh had an important role in royal ceremonies. He would serve the King during special events and feasts.
Serving King Henry III
Hugh d'Aubigny was a loyal supporter of the King. In 1242, he joined King Henry III on an important journey. Hugh was one of seven earls who traveled with the King. They went on an expedition to Aquitaine, a region in France. This shows how trusted and important Hugh was to the King.
The End of the d'Aubigny Line
Hugh d'Aubigny passed away on May 7, 1243. He was buried at Wymondham Abbey in Norfolk, England. Hugh and his wife did not have any children. Because of this, the male line of the d'Aubigny family ended with him.
What Happened to His Lands and Title?
After Hugh's death, his large estates (lands and properties) were divided. They were shared among his four sisters and their children. The title of Earl of Arundel went to his nephew, John FitzAlan. John was the son of Hugh's sister, Isabel d'Aubigny. John FitzAlan became the 6th Earl of Arundel.
Hugh's Marriage
Hugh d'Aubigny married Isabel de Warenne. She was born around 1228. Isabel was the daughter of William de Warenne, 5th Earl of Surrey. Hugh and Isabel did not have any children together. After Hugh's death, Isabel never remarried. She became an important countess in her own right. Isabel founded a Cistercian Abbey at Marham. She may have been buried there later.
