Hugh de Beaumont, 1st Earl of Bedford facts for kids
Hugh de Beaumont (born in 1106) was an important person in England a long time ago. He was known as the 1st Earl of Bedford from 1137 to 1141. An Earl was a powerful noble, often given land and a title by the king.
King Stephen of England gave Hugh the title of Earl. This was one of the first times King Stephen created such a title for someone. Hugh was also known by some interesting nicknames: Hugh the Pauper or Hugh the Poor.
Becoming an Earl
Historians today agree that Hugh de Beaumont did indeed become the Earl of Bedford in 1138. This was a very important position at the time.
The Fight for Bedford Castle
In 1137, King Stephen wanted Hugh to have control of Bedford Castle. The castle was then managed by a man named Miles de Beauchamp. Miles was the "castellan," which means he was in charge of the castle.
King Stephen told Miles to give the castle to Hugh. But Miles refused! Because of this, a "siege" began. A siege is when an army surrounds a castle and tries to take it over.
Eventually, Hugh's forces managed to capture Bedford Castle. However, Miles de Beauchamp was determined. He attacked again and managed to get the castle back!
His Family
Hugh de Beaumont was the third son in his family. His father was Robert de Beaumont, 1st Earl of Leicester. His mother was Elizabeth de Vermandois.
