Hugo Geronimo Fregonese (born April 8, 1908 – died January 11, 1987) was a famous film director and writer from Argentina. He made movies both in Hollywood, USA, and in his home country.
He started directing films in 1943. In 1949, he directed a movie called Apenas un delincuente. Many of Fregonese's American films were Westerns (cowboy movies) and crime stories. Some examples include Man in the Attic (1953) and Black Tuesday (1954).
Hugo Fregonese worked with many well-known actors. These included Gary Cooper, Barbara Stanwyck, Anthony Quinn, and Edward G. Robinson. He also worked with Argentine actors like Luisa Vehil and Víctor Laplace.
He was even nominated for a special award for directing. This was for his film My Six Convicts (1952). The award was the Directors Guild of America Award for Outstanding Directing - Feature Film.

Life and Career of Hugo Fregonese
Hugo Fregonese was born in Mendoza, Argentina. Before becoming a filmmaker, he was a sports journalist. In 1935, he studied at Columbia University in the United States. After that, he worked as an advisor for movies about Latin America.
By 1938, Fregonese was back in Argentina. There, he gained experience as an editor and an assistant director. He also directed short films. Later, he moved to Hollywood, where he directed many feature films.
Family Life
Hugo Fregonese married actress Faith Domergue in 1947. They had two children together. Their daughter, Diana Maria, was born in 1949 in Buenos Aires. Their son, John Anthony, was born in 1951 in Los Angeles. Hugo and Faith later separated and divorced in 1958.
Later Years and Legacy
In his later career, Fregonese directed some movies in Europe. In 1971, he returned to Argentina and continued making films there. He lived in the city of Tigre. Hugo Fregonese passed away in 1987 at the age of 78.
