Humboldt Arts Council facts for kids

Kids Encyclopedia Facts

The Humboldt Arts Council (HAC) is a group that supports art in Humboldt County, California, USA. It's located inside the Morris Graves Museum of Art.

The Humboldt Arts Council started in 1966. It's a non-profit organization. This means it doesn't make money for owners, but uses it to help its cause. The council works to give artists chances to show their work. It also helps teach people about art and makes art easy for everyone to see and enjoy.

The council is the biggest art group in Humboldt County. It works with artists, other art groups, community groups, and schools. Their goal is to make art more available and show how important it is for everyone. The council believes art should be a part of homes, schools, businesses, and government in Humboldt County. They want to lead the way in supporting the rich art history of California's North Coast.

In 1987, the Humboldt Arts Council became a partner for the California Arts Council. This meant they helped represent the community for the California State Summer School for the Arts Program.

Saving a Historic Building

In 1996, the Humboldt Arts Council took on a big project. The City of Eureka offered them a historic building. This was the old Carnegie Library building, built in 1904. It was going to be torn down. For over 100 years, this library had been a symbol of community pride.

The council decided to save it. They started a campaign called the "Carnegie Capital Campaign." They raised $1.5 million from local people, foundations, and companies. In 1999, they began to fix up the old Carnegie building. They turned it into a regional art museum and art center.

On January 1, 2000, the Humboldt Arts Council and the community celebrated. They had a ribbon-cutting ceremony. They dedicated the building as the Morris Graves Museum of Art (MGMA). This marked its new "Century of Service" to the community.

The Morris Graves Museum of Art is named after Morris Graves. He was a famous painter. He also helped start the Northwest School of Art in the Pacific Northwest. Before he passed away in 2001, he gave a large part of his own art collection to the museum. He also allowed his name to be used to help create the museum.

The museum is located in the old Eureka Carnegie Library building. This building was the first Carnegie Library finished in California. It opened in 1904. The museum is also part of the North American Reciprocal Museums program. This means if you are a member of one museum in the program, you might get free entry to others.
