The Hummer is a special frozen drink that tastes like a creamy milkshake. It was first created in Detroit, Michigan, at the Bayview Yacht Club by Jerome Adams. This unique drink was one of the first "milkshake-style" beverages for adults back in the late 1960s. It is made with a mix of light rum, Kahlua (a coffee-flavored liqueur), and delicious vanilla ice cream. It's usually served in a tall wine glass.

The Story Behind the Hummer

The creation of the Hummer drink has an interesting history. Two different bartenders are often given credit for inventing it. According to The Detroit Free Press newspaper, Jerome Adams first made the drink at the Bayview Yacht Club in 1967. However, another article from The Free Press in 1982 suggested it was invented by Farouk Elhaje at a place called the London Chop House.

Over the years, the original recipe for the Hummer has changed a bit. Some new versions use different flavors of ice cream, like peppermint or butter pecan. Others might even use fresh cream instead of ice cream to make it smooth.

What Makes the Hummer Special?

The Hummer is known for its very thick and creamy texture. It's made with two scoops of vanilla ice cream, which makes it so thick that a straw can stand up straight in the glass! This makes it a fun and unique drink to enjoy.

Even though it's a classic, the Hummer hasn't become as popular again as some other old-fashioned drinks, like the Last Word. This is partly because ice cream can be a bit tricky to work with when making drinks.
