Hunter's Point is a small Indian settlement in Quebec, Canada. It is located in the Abitibi-Témiscamingue region. In 2021, only 5 people lived there! The local Algonquin people have a special name for it: Opacikoteak Ecitacikewapan. This means "village built on high mountains."
This community sits right by a lake also called Hunter's Point. It is not a permanent Indian reserve. Instead, members of the Wolf Lake First Nation use it at certain times of the year. Many of these members live in other reserves like Timiskaming and Kebaowek.
The Story of Hunter's Point
Hunter's Point has an interesting past. The first settlement was actually about 20 kilometers (12 miles) south of the current spot. This original place was called Hunter's Lodge.
Early Trading Post
Hunter's Lodge was home to a trading post run by the Hudson's Bay Company. This company was very important for trading furs and other goods in Canada's history. The trading post started in 1846.
The lake and the trading post were probably named after James S. Hunter. He was in charge of the post at that time.
Moving to a New Location
Around 1869, another person from the Hunter family, George, decided to move. He left Hunter's Lodge and settled at the current location of Hunter's Point.
George Hunter was able to attract enough people to this new spot. In 1886, they even opened a post office there! This post office stayed open for many years, finally closing in 1970. The new site became so popular that the old Hunter's Lodge trading post closed down in 1890.
