Timiskaming (once called Timiskaming 19) is a special area of land known as a First Nations reserve. It is located in the Abitibi-Témiscamingue region of Quebec, Canada. You can find it just north of Lake Timiskaming. This land belongs to the Timiskaming First Nation, who are an Algonquin band. Even though it is within the Témiscamingue Regional County Municipality, it is managed separately.

A Look Back in Time

In 1853, a large piece of land was set aside for the Nipissing, Algonquin, and Ottawa Indigenous peoples of the Timiskaming area. This land was along the Ottawa River and was first known as Temiscamingue Reserve.

Over many years, parts of this reserve were given back to the government. This happened in 1897, 1898, and almost every year from 1905 to 1917. More land was given back in 1939, 1953, and 1955. However, many of these land agreements are now being looked at again.

On October 23, 1999, the Quebec government officially changed the spelling of the name from Timiscaming to Timiskaming. Then, on July 30, 2002, the Department of Indian Affairs also recognized this name change for the reserve.
