The Hunter Museum of American Art is a famous art museum located in Chattanooga, Tennessee. It's a special place because it's not just one building, but three buildings from different time periods joined together. Inside, you can see a huge collection of American art that tells the story of the United States through paintings, sculptures, and more.

The museum's art collection includes many important styles. You can find art from the Hudson River School, which is known for its beautiful landscape paintings. There are also works from American Impressionism, the Ashcan School, and modern art movements from the 20th century to today.

The museum itself is a work of art. It includes a beautiful mansion from 1904, a strong-looking addition from 1975 built in a style called Brutalism, and a sleek, modern building from 2005 that serves as the main entrance.

A Museum with a View

The Hunter Museum sits on an 80-foot-tall cliff, or bluff, that looks out over the Tennessee River. From the museum, you get amazing views of downtown Chattanooga and the historic Walnut Street Bridge.

The oldest part of the museum is a mansion called the Faxon-Thomas House. It was built in 1904 on a spot that was once used by Confederate soldiers during the Civil War. Today, this area is a lively arts district. A special walking bridge connects the museum to the Walnut Street Bridge, making it easy for people to visit.

How the Museum Began

The 1975 wing of the museum has a bold, concrete style called Brutalism.

The museum gets its name from George Hunter. His uncle, Benjamin Thomas, was one of the first people to start bottling Coca-Cola. When George inherited the family business, he and his aunt, Anne Thomas, wanted to give back to their community.

They started a group called the Benwood Foundation to support education, science, and art in Chattanooga. The foundation's biggest gift to the city was the Hunter Museum of American Art. They bought the historic Ross Faxon House in 1952 and turned it into a place where everyone could enjoy American art.

Growing and Changing

The newest part of the museum, added in 2005, overlooks the Tennessee River.

Over the years, the museum grew. In 2005, it went through a major $22 million expansion. This project added a brand-new building designed by architect Randall Stout. This new wing gave the museum a modern entrance, more space for special exhibits, and an outdoor garden for sculptures.

The project also included fixing up the original 1904 mansion and rearranging the entire art collection. This big change helped connect the museum's three different buildings and create a better experience for visitors.

The Museum Today

Today, the Hunter Museum of American Art shows off 100 years of architecture and holds one of the best collections of American art in the Southeast. The collection features art from the colonial era all the way to the present day. You can see paintings, sculptures, and even amazing works made of glass.

In 2006, the museum's new building won a national award for its creative design. The award recognized it as one of the best new buildings in the country made with structural steel. The museum continues to be a major cultural center in Chattanooga, welcoming thousands of visitors each year.
