Hyegong of Silla (born 758, died 780) was the 36th king of the ancient Korean kingdom of Silla. He ruled from 765 to 780. King Hyegong was the only child of King Gyeongdeok and Lady Manwol, who became Queen Gyeongsu.
He was the very last king from the family line of King Muyeol. Because of this, many historians see King Hyegong's time as the end of the middle period of the Silla kingdom.
Becoming King
Hyegong became king when he was only 8 years old. This was a very young age to take on such a big responsibility. It seems he found it hard to get used to being a ruler.
Challenges During His Reign
During King Hyegong's rule, there were many difficulties. The ancient book Samguk Sagi tells us that the palace was often in chaos. This was partly due to the young king's lifestyle.
Several important officials led rebellions against the king. These uprisings happened in 768, 770, and 775. One of the most serious rebellions took place in 780. This time, a high official named Kim Ji-jeong led the revolt.
King Hyegong sent his sangdaedeung (a very high-ranking official) Kim Yang-sang to stop the rebels. However, the rebel forces were strong. They managed to attack the royal palace. During this attack, King Hyegong and other members of the royal family were killed.
After the king's death, Kim Yang-sang became the new ruler. He was a descendant of King Naemul. He then took the throne as King Seondeok.
