ICD facts for kids
The International Statistical Classification of Diseases and Related Health Problems (also known as ICD) is a special list of codes. These codes help classify and organize information about different diseases and health problems.
The ICD gives a unique code to many things, like:
- Every medical condition, including mental health problems.
- Specific symptoms, if doctors do not know the exact cause yet. For example, if someone has a cough, but the doctor is not sure why, they would use the ICD code for "Cough."
- Changes in the body or test results that are not normal. This is used when the cause is still unknown.
- Injuries or illnesses caused by things outside the body. This includes broken bones, burns, or poisonings.
- Social issues that might affect health, like health risks from a job or from poverty.
The World Health Organization (WHO) publishes the ICD. One main goal of the ICD is to make sure doctors and countries use the same names for diseases. This makes it easier to compare health information around the world.

Understanding the ICD System
The ICD system helps doctors and health experts around the world speak the same language about health. Imagine if every country used different names for the same sickness! It would be very hard to track how diseases spread or how well treatments work.
Why We Need ICD Codes
ICD codes are important for many reasons:
- Tracking Diseases: They help health organizations track how many people have certain diseases. This helps them understand health trends.
- Comparing Health Data: With standard codes, different countries can compare their health information. This helps them learn from each other.
- Planning Healthcare: Governments and health groups use this data to plan healthcare services. They can see where more doctors or hospitals are needed.
- Research: Scientists use ICD codes in their research to study diseases and find new treatments.
Updates to the ICD System
The ICD system has been changed and updated many times over the years. This is because medical knowledge is always growing. New diseases are discovered, and our understanding of old ones changes.
The Latest Version: ICD-11
The most recent edition of the ICD is called ICD-11. It was created using modern internet tools, like how many people work together on websites today. The World Health Assembly of WHO approved ICD-11 to be used starting January 1, 2022. This new version makes it easier to use and more accurate for today's health needs.
Related Health Classifications
- The Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders is another classification system. It is published by the American Psychiatric Association and focuses only on mental health problems. It is different from the mental health section of the ICD.
