Independent Grocers of Australia, or IGA, is a well-known chain of supermarkets across Australia. The IGA name belongs to an Australian company called Metcash. However, each IGA store is actually owned and run by different local people. This means your local IGA might be a bit different from one in another town!

IGA stores compete with other big supermarkets like Aldi, Coles, and Woolworths. IGA is currently the fourth largest supermarket chain in Australia.

What is IGA?

IGA stands for "Independent Grocers of Australia." It's a network of grocery stores that are all part of the same brand, but they are not all owned by one big company. Instead, they are owned by local families or businesses. This is why you might see different products or layouts at different IGA stores.

The IGA brand first came to Australia in 1988. Back then, only 10 stores joined the IGA group. By 2020, there were over 1,400 IGA stores all over Australia!

Types of IGA Stores

There are many different kinds of IGA stores. Some are small convenience stores, perfect for grabbing a quick snack. Others are medium-sized supermarkets, and some are very large stores with everything you need. You can even find IGA liquor stores.

IGA stores are often found in smaller towns or suburbs. These are places where bigger supermarket chains might not have stores. This makes IGA a really important part of many local communities. Some IGA stores even offer special, unique products that you might not find in other supermarkets.

IGA's New Look

In 2018, IGA started to change its look. They wanted to show that they are truly local stores. They changed their store colors from white to dark grey. They also updated their signs and logos to have a more handcrafted style.

As part of this change, their old slogan "How the locals like it" was updated. The new slogan is "Where the locals matter." This shows that IGA cares about the people in each community where they have a store.

IGA's Own Brands

IGA stores sell many different products, including their own special brands. These brands are made by Metcash, the company that owns the IGA name.

  • Black and Gold: This is a brand for everyday food and household items. These products are usually a good value.
  • Community Co.: This is a higher-quality brand. When you buy Community Co. products, part of the money helps local community programs through something called the IGA Community Chest program.

You can find these IGA brands not only at IGA stores but also at other independent supermarkets that get their supplies from Metcash.
