Independent Grocers of Australia, or IGA, is a well-known chain of supermarkets in Australia. While the IGA brand belongs to an Australian company called Metcash, each IGA store is actually owned and run by different local people. This means your local IGA might be a family business!

IGA stores compete with other big supermarkets like Aldi, Coles, and Woolworths. IGA is currently the fourth largest supermarket chain in Australia.

History of IGA in Australia

The IGA brand first came to Australia in 1988. At that time, ten stores joined the IGA group. Over the years, IGA has grown a lot.

By 2019, IGA stores made up about 7% of all grocery sales in Australia. As of January 2020, there were more than 1,400 IGA stores across the country.

Where You Find IGA Stores

IGA stores are often found in smaller towns or suburbs. They are also in places where there might not be bigger supermarkets. Some IGA stores offer special or unique products that you might not find elsewhere.

IGA's New Look

In 2018, IGA started to change its look. They wanted to show that they are a truly local choice for shoppers. They changed their store colours from white to dark grey. They also updated their signs and logos.

Their old slogan, "How the locals like it," was changed. The new slogan became "Where the locals matter." This new slogan highlights their focus on local communities.

Different Kinds of IGA Stores

IGA has many different types of stores. They range from small convenience shops to large supermarkets. Some IGA stores also sell alcohol.

Here are some of the different IGA store names:

IGA's Own Brands

IGA stores sell products from their own special brands. These are called "private label" brands. They are made by Metcash, the company that owns the IGA brand. You can find these products at IGA and other independent supermarkets that Metcash supplies.
