I natt rømmer vi (which means "Tonight We Escape") is a popular Norwegian children's book. It was written by Bernhard Stokke and first published in 1932. This exciting story won first prize in a special contest held by Windju Simonsen for the "Best book for boys." It quickly became a bestseller, meaning lots of people bought and read it!

What is I natt rømmer vi about?

This book tells the thrilling story of two boys who run away from a special school. This school was for children who needed extra care or guidance. The author, Bernhard Stokke, based the school in the book on a real place. It was an institution called Toftes Gave. This institution was located on the island of Helgøya in the large lake Mjøsa in Norway. Stokke himself worked there as a teacher for several years.

Life at the institution

The book describes what daily life was like at this institution. It was a very strict place with about 200 boys. They all wore uniforms and marched in step to and from their work. Most of their work involved farming or working in workshops.

The escape plan

The two main characters are good friends named Harald and Willy. Both boys are sixteen years old. Harald grew up on a farm, while Willy came from the city of Oslo. They both face difficulties at the institution. Because of this, they decide to try to escape from the island.

One night, they carefully climb out through a window. They find a rowing boat and successfully reach the mainland. As they try to get away, many exciting things happen to them. Eventually, the two boys are caught. They are then brought back to the institution.

Are there more books about Harald and Willy?
