Bernhard Stokke (born September 24, 1896 – died January 17, 1979) was a famous Norwegian teacher and writer. He wrote many books, especially for children. He also created textbooks for schools.

About Bernhard Stokke

Bernhard Stokke was born in a place called Kvikne in Norway. His father, Thomas Stokke, was also a teacher. In 1920, Bernhard married Johanna Aarvold.

Stokke's Career as a Teacher

Bernhard Stokke loved teaching. He worked as a teacher while also studying at the University of Oslo. He learned about geography, astronomy, and chemistry. He finished his studies in 1930.

Teaching in Schools

Before getting a permanent job, he worked as a substitute teacher. He taught at different primary schools. He also worked at a special school called Toftes Gave.

In 1927, he got a full-time job at Tåsen primary school in Aker. Later, he became a headmaster. From 1939 to 1947, he was the headmaster of Bryn primary school in Asker. After that, he returned to Tåsen primary school as headmaster. He worked there until he retired in 1969.

Stokke's Books and Writings

Bernhard Stokke was a very busy writer. He wrote many textbooks for students. He mainly focused on history and geography.

Textbooks for Students

His history textbook, Folket vårt gjennom tidene (Our People Through the Ages), was published in 1940. It became the most popular history book in Norwegian primary schools during the 1940s.

He also helped update a classic geography textbook. This was Geografi for folkeskolen by C. W. L. Horn. Stokke's own geography book, Folkeskolens geografi (Primary School Geography), came out in 1948.

Children's Books

Bernhard Stokke wrote twelve children's books. His first children's book was Blandt olme okser (Among Fierce Oxen) in 1931.

His most famous children's book is I natt rømmer vi (Tonight We Escape), published in 1932. This book is about two boys who run away from a special school. It won a prize for "Best book for boys" and sold many copies. He wrote three more books about the same characters between 1933 and 1936.
