Iain Somerled MacDonald MacCormick (born September 28, 1939 – died September 19, 2014) was a Scottish politician. He was a member of the Scottish National Party (SNP). The SNP is a political party that wants Scotland to be an independent country. Iain MacCormick served as a Member of Parliament (MP) for the area of Argyll.
Iain MacCormick's Early Life
Iain MacCormick was born in the city of Glasgow, Scotland. He went to school at the High School of Glasgow. Later, he studied at the University of Glasgow. Before becoming a teacher, he worked as a computer salesman. In 1965, he moved from Glasgow to become a teacher at Oban High School.
Becoming a Politician
Politics was a big part of Iain MacCormick's family. His father, John MacCormick, helped start the Scottish National Party (SNP). His brother, Neil, also became a politician. Neil was a Member of the European Parliament from 1999 to 2004.
Iain MacCormick first tried to become a Member of Parliament (MP) in 1970. An MP is someone elected to represent a local area in the UK Parliament. On his second try, he was elected as the MP for Argyll in February 1974. He won the seat from the Conservative Party. He was elected again in October 1974.
In the 1979 general election, Iain MacCormick lost his seat to John MacKay. After that, he was elected to the Argyll and Bute District Council in September 1979. This meant he continued to serve his local community.
Iain MacCormick was one of the first members of the Social Democratic Party (SDP) when it began in 1981. Later, he returned to the Scottish National Party. He passed away on September 19, 2014, at the age of 74.
