Occupation Medical physicist

Ian Robert Young was a brilliant British scientist. He was a medical physicist, which means he used physics to solve problems in medicine. He is famous for his important work on magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). This amazing technology helps doctors see inside the human body. Ian Young was born on January 11, 1932, and passed away on September 27, 2019.

Early Life and Education

Ian Robert Young went to Sedbergh School when he was younger. After that, he studied physics at Aberdeen University. This education helped him prepare for his future work in science and medicine.

Developing MRI Technology

Ian Young played a very important role in developing magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). MRI is a special way for doctors to look inside the human body without needing surgery. It uses strong magnets and radio waves to create detailed pictures of organs, soft tissues, bone, and almost all other internal body structures.

Working with Medical Companies

From 1976 to 1981, Ian Young worked for a company called EMI. Then, he worked for GEC from 1981 to 1982. After that, he became the Chief Scientist for the NMR division of Picker International. NMR stands for Nuclear Magnetic Resonance, which is the science behind MRI. His work at these companies helped turn MRI from a scientific idea into a useful medical tool.

Teaching and Research

Ian Young also shared his knowledge with others. In 1986, he became a visiting professor of radiology at the Royal Postgraduate Medical School. He was also a visiting professor at the Imperial College School of Medicine at Hammersmith Hospital for many years, from 1983 to 2001. He also worked as a senior research fellow at the Hirst Research Centre.

Awards and Recognition

Ian Young received many important awards and honors for his groundbreaking work.

University Honors

In 1992, Aberdeen University gave him an honorary Doctor of Science (DSc) degree. This was a special award to recognize his achievements.

Prestigious Fellowships

He was elected a Fellow of the Royal Academy of Engineering in 1988. The next year, in 1989, he became a Fellow of the Royal Society. These are two of the highest honors a scientist or engineer can receive in the United Kingdom. In 1990, he was also made an Honorary Fellow of the Royal College of Radiologists.

Royal Recognition

In 1986, he was made an Officer of the Order of the British Empire (OBE). This honor was given to him by the Queen as part of the 1986 Birthday Honours.

Patents and Publications

Ian Young was a very productive scientist. He held over 40 patents, which means he invented many new things related to MRI. He also wrote more than 100 scientific papers about MRI, sharing his discoveries with other researchers around the world.

Other Achievements

In 2004, he won the Whittle Medal from the Royal Academy of Engineering. He also served as the president of the Society of Magnetic Resonance in Medicine from 1991 to 1992.

Later Life

Ian Robert Young passed away on September 27, 2019, at the age of 87. His work greatly improved medical imaging and helped countless people by making it easier for doctors to diagnose and treat illnesses.
