Sculpture of Ibn Ṭumlūs in Alzira

Ibn Ṭumlūs (Arabic: ابن طملوس) was a very smart scholar from Valencia, a region in Spain. He lived from 1164 to 1223. He was interested in many subjects. These included medicine, philosophy, grammar, and poetry. Today, he is mostly known for his important work in logic. People also knew him by other names. These were Abū al-Ḥajjāj or Abū Isḥāq Yūsuf ibn Muhammed ibn Ṭumlūs. In old Latin writings, he was called Alhagiag Bin Thalmus.

Life Story

Ibn Ṭumlūs was born in a town called Alzira. This town is close to Valencia in Spain. He was born sometime between 1150 and 1165. He studied philosophy and medicine. He might have also studied law. His teacher was a very famous scholar named Averroes (also known as Ibn Rushd).

Ibn Ṭumlūs became very good at medicine. He was so skilled that he took over from Averroes. He became the doctor for the Almohad ruler, Mohammad al-Nāṣir. He worked as the ruler's doctor from 1199 to 1213. Ibn Ṭumlūs passed away in Alzira in the year 1223.

His Important Books

Many of the books Ibn Ṭumlūs wrote are not around today. Also, some books mentioned by people who wrote about him are now lost. He wrote some works about the Arabic language. Sadly, these do not seem to exist anymore.

However, we do know about some poems he wrote. These poems have been collected and studied. Two of his most important books have survived. One is his Book on Logic. The other is his notes on a famous Medical Poem by another scholar named Avicenna.

The Book on Logic

Ibn Ṭumlūs's Book on Logic is also called Kitāb fī Mantiq. Only one copy of this book still exists today. This old copy does not have a date or a clear title. Some experts have tried to guess when it was written.

The book talks about all parts of Aristotle's Organon. The Organon is a collection of Aristotle's writings on logic. Ibn Ṭumlūs even included sections on rhetoric (the art of speaking well) and poetics (the art of writing poetry). He believed these were important parts of understanding logic.

The book starts with a long introduction. In this part, Ibn Ṭumlūs discusses how people viewed logic in his time. He also looked at the logic books of other scholars. These included al-Ghazālī and al-Fārābī. He thought about their ideas from both a thinking and a religious point of view. Even though these scholars were important, his main teacher, Averroes, influenced him the most.

Parts of his Book on Logic have been translated. You can find parts in French and Spanish. However, there are no English translations available yet.
