Ichizo Nakata (中田 一三, Nakata Ichizo, born April 19, 1973) is a Japanese football manager and former player. He was born in Iga, Mie, Japan, on April 19, 1973. Nakata played as a defender and also as a defensive midfielder during his career. After retiring as a player, he became a football coach and manager.
Playing Career Highlights
Ichizo Nakata started his professional football journey in 1992. He joined the club Yokohama Flügels right after finishing high school. During his time with Yokohama Flügels, the team achieved great success. They won the Emperor's Cup in 1993, which is a major football tournament in Japan. They also won the 1994–95 Asian Cup Winners' Cup, an important competition for clubs in Asia.
After playing for Yokohama Flügels, Nakata moved to Avispa Fukuoka in 1996. He played there for two seasons. In 1998, he joined Oita Trinita, which was then known as Oita Trinity. Later that same year, he moved to JEF United Ichihara. He played many matches for JEF United Ichihara until 2000.
In 2001, Nakata returned to play for Oita Trinita. He then joined Vegalta Sendai in 2002. However, he faced challenges due to injuries and could not play as much as he wanted. His last club as a player was Ventforet Kofu in 2004. Throughout his career, Nakata was known for his strong defensive skills.
Coaching and Management Roles
After his playing career, Ichizo Nakata moved into coaching and management. In 2019, he became the manager for Kyoto Sanga FC, a club in the J2 League. He introduced a style of play where his team focused on keeping possession of the ball. This strategy helped Kyoto Sanga FC perform very well at the start of the season. They were in second place in the league standings.
However, the team's results became more difficult in the second half of the season. Kyoto Sanga FC finished in 8th place, just missing out on the play-off spots. His time as manager ended after the 2019 season.
In August 2023, Nakata took on a new role. He became a player development coach at Shimizu S-Pulse, another club in the J2 League. In this role, he helped young players improve their skills and grow as footballers.
More recently, in September 2024, Ichizo Nakata was announced as the new manager of Nara Club. This club plays in the J3 League. He took over the team after the previous manager left. As of July 2025, he continues to lead Nara Club.
