The Iddings Block is a special old building located in Grand Forks, North Dakota. It was officially added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1982. This means it's recognized as an important part of history in the United States.

The Iddings Block was built way back in 1892. At that time, 13 new business buildings were constructed in Grand Forks. Today, the Iddings Block is one of only two buildings left from that busy time between 1888 and 1892.

For many years, from 1892 until about 1906-1909, this building was home to "Iddings and Company." This was the biggest bookstore and stationery shop in the entire state of North Dakota! Later, in 1981, a business called Ruettell's was located there.

What Makes the Iddings Block Special?

The Iddings Block is important because it shows a style of building called "Early Commercial architecture." This was a common way buildings were designed for businesses during that time. It also has a "Vernacular" style, which means it uses local building traditions and materials.

When the Iddings Block was listed on the National Register, it was recognized for its single, important building. This building is considered a "contributing building" because it helps tell the story of the area's history.

Other Historic Buildings Nearby

The Iddings Block is not the only historic building in Grand Forks. Other buildings in the same area, like the Flatiron Building (built in 1906) and the Grand Forks Mercantile Co. (built in 1893), are also listed on the National Register of Historic Places. These buildings were all part of the busy N. Third Street wholesale district.
