Idwal Iwrch facts for kids

Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Idwal Iwrch, also known as Idwal ap Cadwaladr, was an important person in the history of the Kingdom of Gwynedd in Wales. His name means "Idwal the Roebuck" or "Idwal son of Cadwaladr." He was the son of King Cadwaladr ap Cadwallon, who ruled around 655 to 682. Idwal was also the father of King Rhodri Molwynog, who died in 754. Not much is known about Idwal because old records from his time are rare. His name mostly appears in family trees of later kings and in an old Welsh prophecy. This prophecy said he would become king after his father.

Who Was Idwal Iwrch?

Idwal Iwrch is mainly known from old family trees, called genealogies. These records connect him to important kings of Gwynedd. For example, one old record lists him as the father of Rhodri Molwynog. Another old family tree also names him as Rhodri's father.

Historians have looked at these old records. Some history books do not mention Idwal at all. Others only say that he was the father of King Rhodri Molwynog. It is not clear if Idwal himself was a king of Gwynedd. He was the son of a king and the father of a king. This makes him a likely candidate, but there is no strong proof.

The Prophecy of Idwal

Idwal's name also appears in an old Welsh poem. This poem is called the Dialogue between Myrddin and his sister Gwenddydd. It is a special kind of poem that predicts future events. The poem is found in two old Welsh books from the 1300s.

In the poem, characters ask questions and give answers about future kings. Idwal is named as one of these future kings. The poem suggests a line of kings from father to son. This matches the family trees we know. However, it does not always match the actual kings who ruled at the time.
