Building History
Early Beginnings
The First Church of Christ, Scientist, was started on July 17, 1891. It was the very first Christian Science church in the state of Utah. This group worked to build a special place for their community.
Designing the Church
The church building was designed by a local architect named Walter E. Ware. He used a style called Richardsonian Romanesque. This style often features strong, heavy stone, round arches, and towers. The church was built in 1898 using sturdy brick and a type of stone called Utah Kyune sandstone.
Dedication Day
After the building was completely finished and paid for, it had a special ceremony. This "dedication" happened on November 27, 1898. It marked the official opening of the church for its community.
What the Building Is Used For Now
A New Purpose
The Christian Science Church moved out of the building in 2002. For a short time, the building was used by a business that sold art and old items. However, it soon became a church again.
Current Congregation
Since about 2006, the building has been home to the Iglesia La Luz del Mundo. This means the historic building continues to be a place of worship and community for people in Salt Lake City.
