Iglesia de Santa María (San Antolín de Ibias)
Location Asturias,  Spain

The Iglesia de Santa María (San Antolín de Ibias) is a very old church located in Asturias, a beautiful region in northern Spain. This church was built a long, long time ago, in the 11th century. That means it's over 900 years old! It has seen many centuries pass by.

Inside the Church

When you step inside the Iglesia de Santa María, you'll notice some interesting features.

The Nave and Chancel

The main part of the church where people sit is called the nave. At the front of the church, there's a special area called the chancel. This is usually where the altar is located. In this church, the nave and the chancel are separated by a really big arch. Imagine a huge stone doorway connecting the two main parts of the building.

The Apse

At the very end of the church, usually behind the chancel, is a rounded or multi-sided area called the apse. In the Iglesia de Santa María, the apse is divided into two different sections. These sections are separated by something called "lines of imposts." An impost is like a special block or molding that sticks out from a wall. It's often found where an arch begins. So, these lines of imposts help to mark the different parts of the apse.
