Igodomigodo was the first name of a powerful kingdom in what is now Nigeria. Its people are known today as the Edo people. This ancient kingdom later became famous as the Benin Empire.
The kingdom of Igodomigodo started around 40 BCE. It was founded by its first king, named Igodo. He was the first ogiso, which means "ruler of the sky" or "king" in the Edo language. The ogiso kings ruled for many centuries.
From Igodomigodo to Edo
The ogiso era was a long period of rule by the first line of kings. Over time, a new type of ruler came to power. These new kings were called oba.
The First Oba
The first oba was Eweka I. He was the son of a prince named Oranmiyan. When Oba Eweka I became king, he changed the name of the kingdom. It was no longer called Igodomigodo. He renamed it Edo.
Since then, the people of the kingdom have been known as the Edo people. The name Edo also refers to their language and culture.
The Benin Empire's Legacy
The kingdom, now called Edo, grew into the powerful Benin Empire. This empire lasted from about 1180 until 1897. It was located in the area of modern-day Nigeria. It is important not to confuse it with the current country called the Republic of Benin.
Today, the current Oba is Ewuare II. He is the 40th Oba in the line of rulers. He is also considered the 89th ruler of the dynasty that began with Igodo, the first king of Igodomigodo. This shows a long and rich history of leadership.
