The Story of Il Monello Magazine
How It Started
Il Monello magazine began in 1933. It was created by the Del Duca brothers. At first, the magazine only featured comics by Italian artists. Later, in 1936, it started to include popular American comic series too. The magazine came out every week.
A Short Break
The magazine stopped being published in 1939. Many of its comic stories then moved to another magazine for kids. This other magazine was called Intrepido, also owned by the Del Duca brothers.
Its Big Comeback
After 14 years, Il Monello returned in 1953. It became very popular and sold many copies. This was thanks to exciting adventure stories. Some of these were Forza John and Rocky Rider. It also had funny comic strips like Pedrito el Drito and Superbone.
Changing Times
In the early 1970s, Il Monello started to change. It began to focus on an older audience, like older teens. The magazine added new sections. These included regular articles about sports, music, and other entertainment. In 1984, the magazine sold about 231,992 copies each week.
The Final Years
In 1989, the magazine changed its name. It became Monello Okay!. However, it did not last much longer. Il Monello finally closed down in October 1990.
