The Comptroller of Illinois is an important elected official in the U.S. state of Illinois. Think of the Comptroller as the state's chief accountant or money manager. This person is in charge of keeping track of all the state's money and making sure payments are made correctly.

What Does the Comptroller Do?

The Comptroller has a big job: they are responsible for managing the state's financial records. This means they keep track of all the money that comes into Illinois and all the money that goes out. They also order payments for state bills, like salaries for state employees, payments to schools, and money for roads. It's a bit like managing a very large household budget for the entire state!

The office of the Comptroller was created by the Illinois Constitution of 1970. Before this, the state had an "Auditor of Public Accounts" who did a similar job. The new constitution changed the name and some of the responsibilities to create the Comptroller's office we know today. The current Comptroller is Susana Mendoza, who has held the office since December 5, 2016.
