Description: DIG40355: Electrical car for the English Mail Service in 1943. This van comes from a batch of nine vehicles purchased by the General Post Office (GPO) in March/April 1943. They were built by Metropolitan-Vickers at Sheffield. The manufacturer's standard 10/14 cwt. chassis was employed with a body, also by Metropolitan-Vickers, to GPO specification. The load space was 105 cu. ft.; payload 8 cwt.; it has a 40 cell, 80 volt battery and designed to carry a crew of two. They were driven - in the main - by women. All were based in Manchester (as far as is known) for deliveries in the City centre.
