Metropolitan-Vickers facts for kids

Metropolitan-Vickers, also known as Metrovick, was a very important British company. It was active from the early to mid-1900s. They were experts in building large electrical machines. Before becoming Metrovick, the company was called British Westinghouse.

Metrovick made many different kinds of products. They were especially famous for their industrial electrical equipment. This included huge generators that make electricity. They also built powerful steam turbines. Other products were switchgear, transformers, electronics, and equipment for trains.

Metrovick made history with some amazing inventions. They built the Metrovick 950, which was the first commercial computer to use transistors. This was a huge step forward in technology. They also created the Metrovick F.2, which was the first British axial-flow jet engine.

Their main factory was in Trafford Park, Manchester. For most of the 20th century, this factory was one of the biggest and most important places for heavy engineering in Britain and the world.
