Description: Seen in this May 2022 view is the statue of Scottish port Robert Burns that sits at the southeast edge of Washington Park in Albany, New York, overlooking Willett Street. Standing 16 feet high in all, the statue - a work of sculptor Charles Calverley, a local native - is a life-size bronze likeness of Burns that sits atop a granite pedestal engraved with four bas-reliefs, added by the same artist three years after the unveiling of the statue itself. Burns is depicted seated, holding a traditional Kilmarnock bonnet in his left hand and with a book on his knee. The statue was financed by a bequest to the Saint Andrew's Society of Albany by wealthy Scottish immigrant Mary McPherson, whose will enlisted society member Peter Kinnear to find a suitable artist for the project. Its dedication on August 30, 1888 was attended by a host of dignitaries from throughout the North American Scottish diaspora and included a parade, speeches by various local figures, and musical performances.
