Description: View of the newly-established Italian settlement at Assab, in what was to become Italian Eritrea. Assab Bay was purchased from a local sultan by the Italian navigation company Rubattino in 1869, but the first settlement was established only early 1880. The Italian government acquired Assab in 1882. Engraving in the 28 February 1880 issue of the British weekly The Graphic.
