Description: Single flower, greatly enlarged, of Atropa belladonna L. Corolla back-lit by strong May sunshine revealing contrast between pubescent, ribbed exterior (3 ribs per corolla segment) and more glabrous interior. Back-lighting reveals attractive colours and reticulate venation not visible with exterior lighting (which generally results in perception of corolla as drab, dingy and sombre). Flower borne by a self-seeded specimen (probably arising from a bird dropping - as usually the case for this species) growing in the gap between a garden fence and a brick wall abutting on London’s Holland Park. Fallen pollen from ripe anthers visible on interior of one corolla lobe; also fine hairs or plant pappus adhering to minutely puberulent, sticky stigma. This species, like many Solanaceae is somewhat pubescent and sticky.
