Description: Early (circa 1900) American Tool Works lathe. It has a 36" swing and approximately 15 feet between centers. It is of a design thought to be that of a predecessor company, Lodge and Davis. The design matches that of the 1895 designs of Lodge and Davis, but has American Tool Works cast on the headstock-- a company that was not formed until 1898. It is of a 'change gear' style, and by 1905 most lathes featured 'quick change' for changing the lead screw speeds. Two fixed steadies (of different patterns) can be seen affixed to the lathe bed to the right of the tailstock.
