Description: Looking northeast at Black Eagle Dam on the Missouri River in Great Falls, Montana, United States. The original powerhouse built on the south bank of the river is just visible at bottom-center. The second powerhouse, built in 1893-1894 just downstream of the existing south bank powerhouse, is center-left. (Notice the large penstock rising up out of the ground to feed water through the wall of the powerhouse.) The dam itself is in the left of the image. At the dam's northern abutment is the original north bank powerhouse. Downstream of that, just behind the falls and sitting on what appears to be a spit of land, is the second, larger north bank powerhouse (built in 1892). The buildings on the hill are the Boston and Montana Consolidated Copper and Silver Mining Company copper, silver, and zinc smelter. The small smokestack on top of the hill would be replaced by a 506-foot-high "Big Stack" (then the tallest chimney in the world) in 1908.
