Description: One of the most spectacular members of the Protaeceae is the waratah, an aboriginal word meaning "seen from afar". The botanist Robert Brown was intrigued by the aptness of its native name and preserved it in its generic name. Each flowering head consists of numerous individual flowers in groups surrounded by large colourful bracts. The fruit is an elongated woody follicle and the seeds are winged.
