Protecting Australia's Special Gardens
Many groups work hard to protect Australia's heritage gardens and old trees. These include the Australian Heritage Register and the National Trust of Australia. They make sure these beautiful and historic places are looked after for everyone to enjoy in the future.
In Tasmania, there are some special ways gardens are protected. For example, the Tasmanian National Trust is still making its public list of protected properties. Also, the Tasmanian Heritage Register mostly lists addresses, so you might need to ask directly to find out why a specific place is historically important.
Other countries also have similar lists of historic gardens, like the Inventory of Gardens and Designed Landscapes in Scotland and the National Trust in the UK.
Amazing Gardens Across Australia
Australia has about 400 unique gardens that are considered heritage or famous. You can find these gardens in all sorts of places, from dry deserts to rocky areas and even windy coastlines!
Many talented people create these gardens. They include garden designers, horticulturalists (who are plant experts), and landscape gardeners. Their garden designs are very popular. There are thousands of books about garden design, and some garden experts have even become celebrity gardeners, sharing their tips on TV and radio.
There's a special group called the Australian Garden Design Study Group. They actively work to promote and preserve garden heritage. Visiting gardens, both in Australia and overseas, is also a popular activity for tourists.
Some popular garden trends today include:
- Joining garden clubs.
- Making gardens sustainable (which means they are good for the environment).
- Using waterwise plants that don't need much water.
- Creating xeriscape gardens (these are dry gardens).
- Designing gardens with only Australian native plants, often called bush gardens.
Some of these heritage gardens are always open to visitors. Others are private and only open at certain times, usually for a small fee. You can find many more notable Australian gardens to visit through programs like the Open Gardens schemes.

The landscape design at the University of WA was greatly influenced by Oliver Dowell and George Munns.
- The Sunken Gardens used to be a sand pit from when the Hackett Memorial Buildings were being built. It has steps that go down to a circular grassy area, like a stage.
- The gardens are known for their many different mature trees and large groups of flowering shrubs.
- The Great Court features plants native to Australia.
- The Oak lawn is a leftover from the original Shenton farm, which is where the university was started in 1914.
- The Whitfield Court is designed in a Classical Style and includes a reflecting pond.
- The Sunken Gardens are in a Romantic Style, which means they are designed to encourage quiet thought.
- The Great Court is in a Paradise Style. It has informal arrangements of native, exotic, and shrub plants. This Paradise Style was very new and creative for its time.
