Exeter (/ɛksɪtər/) is a small village located in the beautiful Southern Highlands area of New South Wales, Australia. It is part of the Wingecarribee Shire local government area. This quiet village has its own train station on the main railway line that runs south from Sydney.

What is the History of Exeter?

Exeter was founded by a man named James Badgery. He was born near a town called Exeter in England. James came to New South Wales in 1799. By 1812, he was running farms called 'Exeter Farms'.

How Exeter Village Began

James Badgery explored further south and arrived in the area that is now Exeter in 1819. In 1821, he received a large piece of land, about 500 acres. He named his new property Spring Grove.

His son, Henry Badgery, helped the family's land grow even more. By 1841, many people lived and worked on the Badgery properties. Records show that 79 people lived in 11 households in the area. Their main property, Vine Lodge, was home to 33 people.

When Did Exeter Get Its Name?

Around 1888, the Vine Lodge property was divided into smaller pieces. The name Exeter was officially given to the village in 1890. This is how the village got its name, honoring James Badgery's birthplace.

A Look at the Exeter Railway Accident

On March 13, 1914, a serious train accident happened in Exeter. It was a foggy day, and two trains collided on a single track. A mail train crashed into a goods train that was trying to move onto a side track.

This tragic event caused 14 deaths. It is known as the third-worst railway accident in the history of New South Wales.
