Darling Point is a beautiful harbourside suburb in Sydney, Australia. It's located about 4 kilometres east of the main city centre. This area is known for its amazing views of Sydney Harbour and its very fancy homes. Many people consider Darling Point one of the most exclusive places to live in Australia!

History of Darling Point

The land that is now Darling Point was originally known by several Aboriginal names, like Eurambi and Yarranabbi. Later, it was named Darling Point to honour Elizabeth Darling. She was the wife of the New South Wales Governor, Ralph Darling.

Did you know that Darling Point played a part in the 2000 Summer Olympics? It was where the sailing events took place!

Getting Around Darling Point

Darling Point has a few main roads that help people get around. Darling Point Road runs along the top of the headland. Mona Road and Greenoaks Avenue are two other important roads.

You can also get to Darling Point by public transport. There's a bus route (328) that serves the area. If you prefer the water, the Darling Point ferry wharf connects you to other parts of Sydney Harbour. Plus, the nearby Edgecliff railway station makes it easy to travel by train.

Darling Point has some lovely parks where you can relax and enjoy the views.

McKell Park

McKell Park used to be the site of a large house called Canonbury House, but now it's a public park. It's located at the very end of Darling Point Road. This park offers amazing views of Sydney Harbour, making it a popular spot for picnics and even weddings! You can also catch the ferry from here.

The Drill Hall

"The Drill Hall" is part of the Sir David Martin Reserve. It was once part of a Royal Australian Navy base called HMAS Rushcutter. This building is one of Australia's oldest military buildings still standing. It was originally located at Bennelong Point, which is now where the famous Sydney Opera House stands!

Places to Worship

Saint Mark's Anglican Church is a beautiful church on Darling Point Road. It was designed by Edmund Blacket in 1852. Today, it's a very popular place for weddings. Even famous people like Elton John had their first wedding here! It was also used for a fictional wedding in the movie Muriel's Wedding.

Craigend

Close to McKell Park, you'll find Craigend. This grand house was built in 1935 and has a unique mix of Moorish and Art Deco styles. It even features doors from an old mosque in Zanzibar and a traditional Japanese garden! For a while, it was the official home for the US Consul-General. Later, it was used as a filming location for a villain's lair in the movie The Man from Hong Kong in 1975.

Carthona

Carthona is a stunning sandstone mansion built in 1841. It was originally built for the Surveyor-General Sir Thomas Mitchell. Located right on the harbour, it has amazing water views. Many people think it's one of Sydney's most valuable properties. It's currently owned by the family of Philip Bushell, a famous tea merchant.

Glanworth

Glanworth is another impressive house in Darling Point. It was built in 1916 and has a unique American plantation-style design. It features deep verandas and large concrete columns. This house has been owned by several notable people, including James Fairfax, a well-known Australian businessman.

Clubs

The Cruising Yacht Club of Australia is located near Rushcutters Bay Park. This is Australia's top yacht club! They are famous for running the annual Sydney to Hobart Yacht Race, which is a very challenging sailing competition.

According to the 2016 census, about 4,190 people lived in Darling Point. Most residents have English, Australian, or Irish backgrounds. About half of the people living here were born in Australia. English is the main language spoken at home.

By the 2021 census, the population of Darling Point was 3,977.

Notable Residents

• Harry Rickards (1843–1911) was an English-Australian vaudeville artist and theatre owner. His wife, Kate Rickards, was a trapeze artist and musical theatre actress. They both lived in Darling Point.
