Mount Lofty is a lovely neighbourhood located on the north-eastern side of Toowoomba, a city in Queensland, Australia. It's a place where many families live. In 2021, about 3,825 people called Mount Lofty home.

Exploring Mount Lofty's Geography

Mount Lofty has a big park called Jubilee Park. This park has lots of bushland and trails for riding bikes or horses. At the very top of Mount Lofty, you'll find a beautiful garden and a small rainforest. There's also a lookout point where you can see amazing views. A tall tower for WIN Television is also located here.

Mount Lofty was once known by a different name: Tick Hill.

The Story of Longview House

There used to be a large, two-storey house called Longview on the top of Mount Lofty. A man named Charles Cocks moved it from the centre of Toowoomba. He had built the house in the 1860s. In 1904, Mr. Cocks carefully took the house apart. He then rebuilt it on a big piece of land on North Street. From its new spot, the house had great views over Toowoomba.

After Charles Cocks passed away in 1916, his daughter, Eleanor Sophia Cocks, lived in the house. She ran it as a boarding house, where people could stay. She even advertised that it helped cure the flu quickly! After her death in 1956, the house was taken down. Today, a water reservoir stands where Longview once was.

Schools and Churches

Toowoomba State High School opened its doors on 12 May 1919. It started when the government took over the old Toowoomba Technical College. In January 1962, it became known simply as Toowoomba State High School.

A Presbyterian Sunday School hall was opened in Geoffrey Street on 14 August 1926. It was part of St Stephen's Presbyterian Church. By 1927, church services were held there once a month. In 1939, the hall was moved to Mary Street. A new church building was started in 1949 and officially opened on 26 July 1952. This new church is called St David's Presbyterian Church. The old hall is still on the site and is used for other church activities.

Mount Lofty's Population

In 2016, about 3,775 people lived in Mount Lofty. By 2021, the population had grown slightly to 3,825 people.

Education in Mount Lofty

Toowoomba State High School is a government school for students in Years 7 to 12. It teaches both boys and girls. In 2018, the school had 832 students and many dedicated teachers. It also has a special program for students who need extra support.

Mount Lofty does not have its own primary school. Younger students usually go to nearby schools. These include Toowoomba East State School in East Toowoomba or Harlaxton State School in Harlaxton.

St David's Presbyterian Church is located at 46 Mary Street. It is a part of the Presbyterian Church of Queensland.
