Withcott is a small town and area in the Lockyer Valley Region of Queensland, Australia. It is a rural place, meaning it has a lot of open land and farms. In 2021, about 2,067 people lived in Withcott.

Where is Withcott Located?

Withcott is found in the beautiful Lockyer Valley. It sits right at the bottom of the Toowoomba mountain range. The town is on the Toowoomba Connection Road, which used to be part of the main Warrego Highway.

Withcott is about 116 kilometers (72 miles) west of Brisbane, the capital city of Queensland. It is also only about 10 kilometers (6 miles) east of a bigger city called Toowoomba.

A Look at Withcott's Past

Withcott has an interesting history with changes over the years.

Early Buildings and Schools

  • In 1900, the Withcott Methodist Church was built from timber. It cost £90 and could hold 100 people. This church is no longer there.
  • Withcott State School first opened in September 1912. Mr. M. F. Ryan was its first headmaster.
  • The original school was at 159 Roches Road.
  • In 1971, the school closed because only 8 students were left. The land was then sold.
  • However, because more families moved to Withcott, the school reopened on January 31, 1984. It was built in a new spot on Biggs Road, with Lance Wilson as the principal.

Community and Church Buildings

  • The Holy Family Catholic Church was built in 1990 using bricks.
  • The Withcott Church of Christ was also built in 1990, also from bricks.
  • In 1969, a group called the Upper Lockyer Withcott branch of the Queensland Country Women's Association (QCWA) built a hall. This hall was at 4 Biggs Road, next to the Warrego Highway.
  • The QCWA hall was taken down in late 2018. Now, that spot is a public area where people can relax during the day. It has bathrooms and a covered seating area.

The 2011 Floods

In January 2011, Withcott experienced a very serious flash flood. This flood caused a lot of damage to the town.
