Where is Lockyer?
Lockyer is a rural area, meaning it's mostly countryside with farms and open spaces. A railway line, called the Main Line railway, used to run through here. There was once a train station called Lockyer railway station, but it is no longer used.
The main road in Lockyer is Murphys Creek Road. It goes from the north to the south of the area.
Lockyer's Past
The land around Lockyer has a long history. It is part of the traditional country of the Jagara people. Jagara is one of the Aboriginal languages spoken in South-East Queensland.
The name "Lockyer" comes from Lockyer Creek. This creek was named in 1829 by an explorer named Allan Cunningham. He named it after Major Edmund Lockyer, who explored the Brisbane River a few years earlier in 1825.
Over the years, there were a couple of schools in the area. Lockyer Creek Provisional School opened around 1891. It later changed its name to Lockyer Provisional School in 1892 before closing in 1915.
Another school, Lockyer Upper State School, opened on July 3, 1939. It was also known as Upper Lockyer State School. This school closed on September 27, 1968. Even though it was called "Upper Lockyer," it is now within the boundaries of the Lockyer locality.
People of Lockyer
The number of people living in Lockyer is quite small. In 2016, a count of the population showed there were 95 people.
More recently, in 2021 census, the population was counted again. This time, 89 people lived in Lockyer.
Special Places in Lockyer
Some places in Lockyer are considered very important because of their history. These are called "heritage-listed" sites. They are protected so that their history can be preserved for the future.
One such site is the Lockyer Creek Railway Bridge (Lockyer). This bridge is part of the old Toowoomba – Helidon Line.
