Description: Cantonment Stevens in the Bitterroot Valley of the Washington Territory in the United States in 1853-1854. Gustavus Sohon, artist. Cantonment Stevens was founded by Lt. John Mullan, a United States Army explorer with the Stevens Railroad Survey. It was named for Isaac Stevens, leader of the survey party and later Governor of the Territory of Washington.
