Description: Frontispiece illustration of Casanova's History of my Flight from the Prisons of the Republic of Venice. (1787, dated 1788). "It's him. Place him in custody". Casanova is arrested and brought before the secretary of the State Inquisitors at the Doge's Palace (Palazzo ducale) who orders the chief jailer to place Casanova in custody. Casanova is elegantly dressed in this engraving. He explains in History of my Life that when he was awoken and ordered to dress because he was to be brought before the Tribunal of the State Inquisitors, he, presumably out of nervousness, took his time to dress, shave, comb his hair, put on a lace shirt and his best suit ("mon joli habit") without thinking or talking. (Histoire de ma Vie, La Pléiade, 2013, Tome troisième, XIII, p. 901.)
