Description: Dunbeg Fort. This ancient site is situated in the southwestern section of the grid square which is characterised by sea, cliffs, pasture, the R559, a residence or two besides this item. The fort is an iron age fort. "The Iron Age in Ireland lasted from about 500BC to 500AD. These forts are usually defensive structures, but often a refuge of last resort, during the Celtic invasion of the country. This fort is located on a sheer cliff promontory which projects South into Dingle Bay at the base of Mount Eagle. The defences consist of four lines of banks and five fosses and an inner drystone rampart with a complex entrance flanked by two guard chambers. In the interior is a single clochaun (beehive)."
