Image: Embothrium sericeum (Sowerby)

Description: This is an image of a print of a hand coloured engraving by James Sowerby (1757-1822), based on a drawing nominally by John White but probably by the convict artist Thomas Watling. It appeared as Tab. IX in James Edward Smith's 1793 A Specimen of the Botany of New Holland. The plant depicted was then known as Embothrium sericeum, and was divided into three varieties: α = minor, β = major and γ = angustifolia. These are now known as Grevillea sericea, Grevillea speciosa and Grevillea linearifolia respectively. The accompanying text explains the figure thus: 1. A branch of var. α 2. A Flower. 3. Half-ripe Fruit. 4. A Seed. 5. Leaves of var. β. 6. Ditto of γ.
