Genus:
Grevillea
Species:
sericea

Grevillea sericea, often called the pink spider flower, is a beautiful shrub. It is found only in New South Wales, Australia.

What Does it Look Like?

The pink spider flower is a shrub that usually grows between half a meter and two meters tall. Its branches can be a bit bumpy or ridged. The leaves are long and straight, about 3 to 12 centimeters (1 to 5 inches) long. They are also quite narrow, only 1 to 5 millimeters wide.

Its flowers are bright pink. Like other Grevillea plants, its flowers grow in a special cluster called an inflorescence. This means many small flowers grow together on one stem.

How it Got its Name

Embothrium sericeum (Sowerby)
Embrothium sericeum, as shown in an old book.

This plant was first officially described in 1793. A scientist named James Edward Smith wrote about it in his book, A Specimen of the Botany of New Holland. He first called it Embothrium sericeum var. minor.

Later, in 1810, another famous botanist named Robert Brown moved it to the Grevillea group. That is how it got its current name, G. sericea.

Sometimes, this plant can mix its genes with other Grevillea species. This creates a new plant that is a mix of both parents. This process is called hybridisation. For example, it can hybridise with G. linearifolia.

Where Does it Grow?

The pink spider flower is found all over New South Wales. You can see it in many places. It grows south of Sydney and stretches inland towards Mudgee. It also grows north to places like Toronto and Wyee.
