Description: Basma* is from close to Syria’s border with Jordan. She is now living as a refugee in Jordan’s capital Amman, where she is receiving assistance from the UK in the form of food vouchers distributed by WFP and Save the Children.

She crossed the border with her husband and three sons last January because of the fighting. Her sons went back to Syria to find work, but one of them was subsequently killed.

“'My sons were terrified, and one of them was killed. Eventually we had to come to Jordan", she says.

"I’m relying on these food vouchers now as I cannot work here, Fortunately they cover about half of my family’s food needs. The main worry is the cost of the rent though. Its very expensive here in Jordan compared to Syria”, she says.

The UK-funded food vouchers are equivalent to about £12 per person per fortnight, and are designed to cover basic food needs. They can only be used by refugees who have registered with the UN's refugee agency, UNHCR. Nearly half a million Syrian refugees are living in host communities in Jordan, rather than in camps - but often this means they have little access to support services.
