Description: Fishergate Tramroad Tunnel, Preston Because there was no money to build an aqueduct across the River Ribble south of Preston, the two parts of the Lancaster Canal on opposite sides of the river were connected by a tramroad. This passed under Fishergate in the centre of Preston in a tunnel. The tramroad became disused by the 1860s but, because the canal had been bought by the London & North Western Railway, the railway company modified the approaches to the tunnel and converted it into road access to their Butler Street goods yard. More recently, with the conversion of the goods yard to a huge car park serving a new shopping mall, the tunnel has become an access road to the car park. This is the northern end of the tunnel at the foot of a ramp from Corporation Street.
